Laurence Olivier's Signature

"It will be very nice to win, don’t get me wrong, but it’s about going there, it’s about the event, it's about celebrating theatre"Kelly Price (Best Supporting Performance in a Musical nominee 2010)

"I never actually thought I would make it on the stage and then my debut, to then get a nomination, it’s extraordinary. "Keira Knightley (Best Actress in a Supporting Role nominee 2010)

"It’s great, I don’t know what it means exactly except Laurence Olivier’s name is attached to it and that’s a great honour. "James Earl Jones (Best Actor nominee 2010)

"Working with Rachel (Weisz) and Eliott (Cowan) and the whole cast, and with such fantastic words, it's quite hard to do it badly. Tennessee (Williams) is a bit of a genius"Ruth Wilson (Best Actress in a Supporting Role nominee 2010)

"Desiree is absolutely the role of my life so far"Hannah Waddingham (Best Actress in a Musical nominee 2010)

"In a sense we’ve been the naughty child of the theatre and not very accepted in these circles so it’s nice to be around." Brian May (Representing Audience Award nominee We Will Rock You)

"To have seven nominations for a show that only lasted six months, nine weeks in the West End, is just phenomenal." Charlotte Wakefield (Best Actress in a Musical nominee 2010)

"It was an ensemble piece so I’m here but I sort of represent everybody else who was there on stage with me. I'm very aware of that."Rachael Stirling (Best Actress in a Supporting Role nominee 2010)

"It’s the greatest thrill of my life. I’m not usually big on awards, but coming from Australia and being nominated, it’s a real honour"Tony Sheldon (Best Actor in a Musical nominee 2010)

"I think hosting something like this is one of those big grown up steps. You suddenly look at yourself and go, ok I must be grown up then, because in my head I'm still six years old" Anthony Head (2010 Laurence Olivier Awards host)

"I think it’s been quite an eye opener for a lot of people who only know me as being part of the Spice Girls, so lots of theatregoers have actually been quite surprised that there’s more to me than that"Melanie Chisholm (Best Actress in a Musical nominee 2010)

What are the Laurence Olivier Awards?

Awards 2009 winners

Theatreland's most prestigious awards - the equivalent to the Tony Awards in America - the Laurence Olivier Awards were established in 1976 as The Society of West End Theatre Awards, and Lord Olivier agreed to have his name associated with them in 1984.

The Awards are run by The Society of London Theatre but are adjudicated by panels that are equally made up of members of the theatregoing public and experts chosen for their knowledge and professional experience. Read more information about the judging process (external link).

The full list of winners from every year of the awards 1976-2009 is available here (pdf)
